St. Louis
St. Louis PCC car 1548,
one of 100 built with all-electric operation in 1940, is seen at the 39th
and Park Shops in 1948. These cars were mainly used on routes 40-Broadway
and 44-Broadway-Chippewa. The latter was a rush hour line until its
1950 abandonment. On December 2, 1954, 50 of the 1500's were sold
to Philadelphia and the rest were relegated to rush hour service until
all were retired from 1956 to 1958. Route 40 then used postwar cars
1751-99 until it was converted to bus operation on August 20, 1956 to permit
the construction of the Mark Twain (his real name was Samuel L. Clemens)
Expressway.
